PEI Build Plates: Smooth or Textured, and Which Materials to Watch

The short answer

Smooth, textured, satin: three surfaces, three uses

PEI (polyetherimide) is a heat-resistant plastic used as a build plate coating because it grips well while hot and releases naturally as it cools. It comes in several finishes: a smooth plate, a textured plate made by powder coating, and an in-between satin finish, each giving a different look to the bottom of a printed part, from a strong gloss to a pronounced matte.

Choosing between these finishes mostly comes down to the finish you want on the part's underside and the material you print most often. A smooth plate suits anyone after a flat, consistent part bottom, while a textured plate favors broad adhesion across many filaments without extra adhesive in most cases.

Many printers ship with a removable, magnetic plate that makes it easy to keep both finishes on hand and swap between them depending on the part, without taking anything else on the machine apart. Swapping plates also shifts the zero point and first-layer height slightly, which is why it is worth keeping a separate calibration profile per plate rather than one setting applied to both.

Which materials stick poorly, or too well, on each surface

Per the Prusa Knowledge Base, a textured plate suits PETG, CPE, and flexible materials like TPU particularly well without needing glue stick in most cases, while ASA, ABS, nylon, and PC often need an added adhesive to bond properly on that same surface. PETG is a special case: it bonds so well to a hot textured plate that it can pull material off the coating on removal if you force it off while still warm.

On a smooth plate, Prusa's documentation instead recommends a mild degreaser like glass cleaner for PETG, since regular isopropyl alcohol tends to make that material stick too well to a smooth surface. PLA, by contrast, generally sticks without trouble on both finishes, which makes it a useful reference material for judging whether a plate is clean or dirty before changing anything else.

For a fiber-filled technical material, such as a carbon-reinforced PETG or PLA, the manufacturer's data sheet remains the reference to check before picking a surface and bed temperature, since those fillers can change adhesion behavior compared with the same material unfilled.

Cleaning a PEI plate without damaging it

90% isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol, applied cold with a lint-free cloth, remains the go-to for routine care of all three finishes according to Prusa. A skin-formulated alcohol product should be avoided, since it often contains oils that hurt adhesion rather than restore it, an easy detail to miss when reaching for a quick substitute.

When IPA alone stops removing buildup, warm soapy water with a few drops of dish soap dissolves sugary and greasy residue more effectively, per the same source. Acetone still has a place, but only on a smooth PEI plate and occasionally, roughly once or twice a month according to Prusa; it should never be used on a textured or satin plate, where it permanently damages the coating.

Do you need glue stick on a PEI plate?

On a PEI plate in good condition, glue stick adds nothing for PLA and can actually hurt adhesion by leaving an uneven film. When to replace a worn PEI plate

A PEI plate that loses adhesion after a proper cleaning, shows uneven glossy patches on a surface that should be matte, or has coating visibly peeling in spots, has reached the end of its life. Per Prusa, light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (600 to 1000) can restore adhesion to a tired smooth plate after long use, an operation that does not apply the same way to a textured surface.

The first layer guide is worth checking before blaming the plate: a poor height or bed temperature setting often mimics the symptoms of a worn coating. A replacement plate, whether PEI, glass, or an alternative like garolite, is best chosen based on the materials you print most regularly.

What a manufacturer guarantees, and does not, on a textured plate

Prusa's page for its textured sheet describes a spring-steel sheet powder-coated with a PEI polymer (Ultem), used in the company's own print farm for years. The manufacturer calls it perfect for high-adhesion filaments such as PETG and ideal for flexibles like TPU, with a rougher texture than the satin sheet and better durability than the smooth sheet with some materials. Its flexible-materials page says the same thing from the other side: their adhesion is so strong that a powder-coated sheet or a release layer, glue stick or Kapton tape, is necessary.

One detail rarely read before buying: Prusa states that the exact color and the pattern left under the part can differ from one sheet to another, since each sheet is checked for its function, adhesion and durability with certain materials, but not for its cosmetic aspect. Two textured sheets of the same reference can therefore leave a slightly different underside, which matters for a batch of decorative objects.

For PLA, the same documentation prefers a satin or smooth PEI sheet, which gives the best adhesion for that material and a glossy underside. Choosing a plate therefore comes down to choosing your main materials: textured for PETG and flexibles, smooth or satin for clean PLA, with the first layer recalibrated after every swap since the sheets differ in thickness.

PEI, glass, garolite: the alternatives in brief

Glass offers very consistent flatness and is often cheap to replace, at the cost of adhesion that depends more heavily on an adhesive like hairspray or glue stick, particularly for PLA. Garolite (or G10), a fiberglass composite plate, is mostly used for ABS and technical materials that need good high-temperature performance without sticking excessively.

For most people printing several common materials, PEI remains the most versatile compromise between adhesion, ease of cleaning, and availability from most manufacturers, which explains why it ships as the default across a large share of the market.

Switching surfaces does not skip the basics: proper cleaning, up-to-date leveling, and a bed temperature matching the material's data sheet remain the three things to check before assuming a new plate will fix a recurring adhesion problem.
