STL vs 3MF: what to check before printing

STL commonly carries mesh geometry. A 3MF file may also carry settings and other project information, so inspect it in your own slicer.

Check scale and machine settings

Confirm dimensions after import. A 3MF project may have been prepared for a different printer, nozzle or material. Select and inspect your own machine profile before generating print instructions.

Use the original model page

Keep the source page, designer and license. Check whether modifications and commercial prints are allowed. A free download is not automatically an unrestricted commercial license.

Slice for your own printer

Avoid running unknown pre-sliced machine instructions. Generate the print file from a model you have inspected using the correct configuration.
