Form 3 resin tanks: identify versions and check compatibility

Form 3 and Form 3B resin tanks come in V1, V2 and V2.1 versions, with compatibility that depends on the resin. This guide follows Formlabs documentation to identify a tank, compare its reference with the intended resin and interpret lifetime warnings. Its scope is the documented Form 3/Form 3B family and variants, not tanks from other generations.

The short answer

First identify the version from the tank sticker or the Form 3/Form 3B touchscreen, then compare its SKU with the compatibility entry for your intended resin. Formlabs says V2.1 is required for Castable Wax 40 and works with all resins compatible with the Form 3/Form 3B family. The on-screen lifetime monitor and film inspection help identify replacement signs; use the thresholds and warnings in the Formlabs notice.

Scope: Form 3 tanks and documented versions

Formlabs documents three Resin Tank versions for the Form 3, Form 3B, Form 3+ and Form 3B+: V1, V2 and V2.1. You can identify the version from a sticker on the back or the touchscreen of a compatible printer. Resin compatibility and references differ by version; this guide helps check that version-resin pairing.

This guide covers the complete tanks identified in those Formlabs pages. Choosing and replacing only the film belongs on the neighboring page about FEP, PFA and ACF vat films. Do not carry compatibility over from another generation or brand. The resin printer buying guide places this consumable in the equipment list, while the startup budget tool helps estimate startup spending.

Reading your tank version before you order

The first check happens on the back of the tank. According to Formlabs documentation, the Resin Tank V2.1 carries a small V2.1 sticker on the back left, above the ID chip. The Resin Tank V2 carries a V2 sticker in the same spot. The Resin Tank V1 is recognizable by an RT-F3-01 sticker on the back right, next to the spout. The matching catalog references are RT-F3-02-01 for the V2.1, RT-F3-02 for the V2 and RT-F3-01 for the V1. Those three codes are what you compare against a seller's listing.

The second check goes through the printer. Formlabs states that this feature requires firmware 1.4.8 or newer. For a tank outside the machine, simply insert it: the touchscreen displays a message with the tank version. For a tank already installed, tap the printer icon; the resin tank section of the status screen shows the version. Reading it on screen has a practical benefit: it removes any doubt when a sticker is smeared with resin or peeling. Write down the version and reference before you browse listings, because the three tanks look very similar at a glance.

Resin compatibility across V1, V2 and V2.1

Tank version determines resin compatibility. The Formlabs identification page lists ESD, Castable Wax 40, IBT, Rigid 10K, Tough 2000, Elastic, Rigid 4000 and Grey Pro as incompatible with V1. It describes filling and printing blocks for those combinations. For V2, that page explicitly lists Castable Wax 40 as incompatible, but this list alone does not verify every formulation: the lifetime table adds the exclusions below.

The Resin Tank V2.1 prints with every resin compatible with the Form 3, Form 3+, Form 3B and Form 3B+, and it is required for Castable Wax 40 Resin. Formlabs attributes the difference to a manufacturing process change that improves the chemical characteristics of the print film. The Formlabs lifetime table adds other cases reserved for the V2.1: PU Rigid 650 Resin and PU Rigid 1000 Resin, plus Alumina 4N Resin and IBT Resin. Before ordering, start from the resin you actually plan to run, then choose the version that accepts it. The resin materials guide helps you qualify that need first.

Lifetime limits and the signs that force a replacement

According to the Formlabs notice, tank lifetime depends on time exposed to resin, time spent printing, the resin itself, model geometry, temperature and physical damage. Formlabs recommends replacing the tank as soon as any of these appears: noticeable physical damage, film wear that starts to affect print quality, or punctures, cuts, wrinkles and gouges in the film. Repeatedly printing the same model in the same location on the tank wears the film faster in that spot.

On top of those signs, each resin group has a maximum lifetime. For aggressive resins, Formlabs sets ten weeks exposed to resin or 250 hours of printing, whichever comes first. For moderately aggressive resins, the ceiling is 35 weeks or 600 hours. For non-aggressive resins there is no maximum; the estimated lifetime for most applications is 600 to 800 hours of printing, depending on how much damage the film accumulates. Formlabs notes that high volume production can shorten these figures, and that some formulations degrade tank components until the tank leaks, which is why the ceiling applies even to a tank that looks undamaged. The page pairs ten weeks with 75 days and 35 weeks with 250 days, which are not exact equivalents. Do not invent a corrected conversion; ask Formlabs to confirm the applicable threshold if uncertain.

Check printer, version and resin before choosing a tank

The Formlabs notices provide identification marks, SKU references, resin compatibility and lifetime guidance. To choose a tank, record the printer model and the version read from its sticker or touchscreen, then check the tank reference and compatibility entry for the resin you intend to use.

Before choosing a listing, compare its reference with RT-F3-01, RT-F3-02 or RT-F3-02-01 in the table, then check the intended resin and its lifetime limits. If the listing does not identify the model, SKU or resin, ask the seller or Formlabs support to confirm rather than inferring interchangeability. A tank for another generation, such as the Formlabs Form 4, is outside this guide’s scope.

Tracking estimated lifetime from the screen

The Form 3 and Form 3B include lifetime monitoring. According to Formlabs, the printer shows no warning while remaining lifetime sits between 100% and 25%. At 25%, a message when you start a print warns that the tank is nearing the end of its recommended lifetime and could begin leaking in the next few prints. At 0%, the message states that the tank has reached the end of its lifetime, is likely to leak and damage the printer, and recommends discarding it immediately. To read the value, tap the printer icon, then the section labeled with the tank type, to open the Tank Details screen.

The notice also describes a specific historical fault: an unused tank could display a first-use date in 1970 and appear already expired. Formlabs identifies fixes released on March 16, 2022, including Form3_1.18.3 and Form3L_1.9.9. For this error affecting a new tank, the notice calls for updating firmware and then making its actual first print to correct the calculation. This is not a procedure for extending a genuinely worn tank or one that has reached its lifetime ceiling. If the date remains wrong, enable Remote Assistance and Dashboard Logging as instructed and contact support or your reseller. Digital monitoring complements visual film inspection; it does not replace it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which tank version I have?

Check the sticker on the back: V2.1 or V2 on the back left above the ID chip, or RT-F3-01 on the back right near the spout for a V1. You can also insert the tank: with firmware 1.4.8 or newer, the touchscreen displays the version.

Can a V1 tank still be used?

Yes, for formulations it accepts and within their lifetime limits. The V1 exclusion list does not mean V2 accepts all those resins: Castable Wax 40 and IBT require V2.1. The lifetime table also reserves PU Rigid 650, PU Rigid 1000 and Alumina 4N for V2.1. Check your exact resin name and version in the Formlabs matrix.

Which tank do I need for Castable Wax 40 Resin?

Only the Resin Tank V2.1, reference RT-F3-02-01. The printer blocks the V1 and V2 for this resin, both at filling and at print start.

Should I replace a tank that looks fine?

Yes, once it reaches the lifetime ceiling for its resin group. Formlabs explains that some formulations degrade tank components and eventually cause a leak, even with no visible damage.

What should I check before choosing a replacement tank?

Record the Form 3 or Form 3B model and the tank version from its sticker or touchscreen. Then compare the SKU and intended-resin compatibility; Formlabs says V2.1 is required for Castable Wax 40 Resin. If the listing does not identify those details, ask for confirmation before choosing.
