FreeCAD vs Fusion: choosing for repair-part design

For a replacement handle or clip, CAD choice depends on dimensions to revise, required files, and usage terms. FreeCAD offers parametric objects; Fusion has distinct parametric and direct modes. This comparison combines features, Fusion personal-use terms, and its offline documentation consulted on October 20, 2026. It also uses FreeCAD’s license explanation in its archived documentation repository, with that scope stated.

The short answer

Both tools offer parametric work: FreeCAD describes linked properties, while Fusion records features in a Timeline in parametric mode. Autodesk excludes commercial projects from Fusion for personal use; the archived FreeCAD documentation repository’s license explanation permits commercial use of the software. Separately check model rights, exchange format, and data requirements. Fusion’s help describes offline mode with reconnection every two weeks; check its availability in your account. Compare the tools against your part rather than a general accuracy promise.

What a repair part actually asks of your CAD software

For a repair-part example, record the dimensions that matter on the original part or its housing, then note which ones may need revision. FreeCAD says its objects are parametric and constrained sketches can form the basis of other objects. The cited pages do not prescribe a measurement method, tolerance, or mechanical validation; treat a model as a proposal to check against the specific device.

Before starting, note the format required by the receiving software. FreeCAD lists STEP, STL, and its native FCStd format; Autodesk only says import/export file types are limited in Fusion for personal use, without listing them here. The unitless STL guide separately covers how an STL’s dimensions may be interpreted.

The publisher pages describe software features, not the fit or safety of a repair. Geometry, material, manufacturing, and the specific device must be assessed separately; this comparison does not qualify a safety-critical part.

Parametric history: what each publisher documents

FreeCAD describes objects driven by properties, with on-demand recomputation and relationships between properties. For your repair, you can prepare a suggested parameter list: housing width, center distance, passage diameter, and thickness. Record which ones should remain linked when a dimension changes. This list helps choose a model structure; it specifies neither dimensions nor strength for your device.

FreeCAD says its sketcher creates constrained 2D shapes that can serve as a basis for objects in Part Design or other workbenches. For a repair part, you can assess whether that workflow matches the parameters you need. This features page is not a step-by-step tutorial or a fit validation.

Fusion help distinguishes parametric mode, which records features and relationships in the Timeline, from direct mode, which does not track them. Modify > Change Parameters edits parameters and recomputes dependent features. Switching to direct mode removes history; switching back captures prior geometry in a Base Feature rather than reconstructing every operation. Check the mode before choosing how to revise the part.

Exchange formats: STEP, STL, and what each one keeps

FreeCAD lists formats such as STEP, IGES, OBJ, STL, DWG, DXF, SVG, DAE, and IFC, as well as its native FCStd format. The page says add-on workbenches can add formats. This published list does not specify every export context or whether an exchange file preserves modeling history.

For an exchange, ask the recipient which format and content they need: geometry, parameters, or both. FreeCAD lists STEP and STL, but this features page does not explain what each preserves or how the recipient can edit the model. Keep the native FreeCAD file if you want your working document, and check the exported result separately before sending it.

Autodesk says Fusion for personal use limits import/export file types without listing them; the full subscription includes all file types. If an exchange requires STEP, do not assume it is available: check your account options and documentation for your version.

License terms: who is allowed to use what

FreeCAD’s official license documentation says the software can be used for private, commercial, or institutional purposes. It distinguishes the software license from models produced with it, on which it does not impose that license. The repository reviewed has been archived since April 1, 2026: use this as the project’s explanation and check terms for components or extensions you add. Commercial software use does not settle rights in a third-party model reused for the repair.

Autodesk says Fusion for personal use is for qualifying personal, non-commercial projects. The page also states an annual revenue threshold and excludes primary employment, company environments, and commercial training. It says commercial projects or exceeding the threshold require users to stop using this version and convert to a subscription. Check the Special Terms for your account; home-based manufacturing alone does not make a project eligible.

Autodesk’s displayed terms may change; check the Special Terms and your account status before a project. This comparison summarizes the page consulted and is not legal advice.

Offline work and file organization

Autodesk’s July 2, 2026 article describes switching offline through the clock icon and Working Online. It requires reconnecting to the servers every two weeks. This establishes an offline mode without promising that every feature and file is available in your situation. Before traveling, prepare the documents you need and check their availability in your setup.

For your repair record, separate the working document, delivered export, and backup copy. Record where each version is stored, who can access it, and how you will recover it. FreeCAD lists FCStd as its native format; for Fusion, check archive formats and options available under your account. This suggested record concerns your organization; it is not a privacy audit of either tool.

Choose a revision trial before committing: duplicate your working model, change one planned dimension, then check the elements you expected to follow. Also record what should stay unchanged. Compare the exported result with target dimensions. This protocol is proposed for your project, without a comparative trial performed here or a claim that either tool produces a better-fitting part.

A decision matrix by scenario

Suggested scenario: a non-critical household cover whose width needs revision. Start with a few model parameters and the revision check above. FreeCAD and Fusion’s parametric mode provide documented mechanisms to express relationships; their presence does not measure interface learning time. Keep a copy before each revision and compare dimensions before a trial print.

Scenario: a customer order or company work. Autodesk’s restrictions exclude the personal-use edition in these contexts. FreeCAD’s official license explanation permits commercial software use; still check rights in the data, models, and extensions involved. Then assess whether you can produce the required working document and export. This license distinction provides a selection criterion without qualifying a safety-critical repair.

Scenario: exchanging a file with a shop or another person. FreeCAD lists STEP among its formats. Autodesk does not name the formats excluded from Fusion for personal use, so check the option in documentation or your account before promising a STEP export. In either case, ask the recipient to confirm the accepted format and version.

Frequently asked questions

Is FreeCAD enough to model a repair part?

FreeCAD describes parametric objects and a constraint-based sketcher, and says the software uses real-world units. These features may help organize a model with parameters; they do not validate your measurements or the part’s fit.

Can I use Fusion for personal use to fix a customer's appliance?

Autodesk’s page excludes commercial projects, primary employment, and company environments from Fusion for personal use. Check the full Special Terms and your circumstances; the product comparison is not individual legal advice.

Does a STEP file keep my parametric history?

The FreeCAD page lists STEP and FCStd but does not explain here what data a STEP exchange preserves. Ask the recipient what they need and keep your FreeCAD working document if you may need to continue editing it.

Why does my STL come out at the wrong scale?

FreeCAD says it uses real-world units; that does not determine how your slicer interprets an STL. Compare the dimensions shown after import with the intended dimensions, then consult the unitless STL guide.

Does Fusion for personal use export STEP?

Autodesk says Fusion for personal use limits import/export file types without naming them. Check the documentation or your account to confirm STEP is available before promising it for an exchange.

Can Fusion work offline when preparing a repair?

Autodesk’s July 2, 2026 help describes offline mode for Fusion and requires reconnecting every two weeks. It does not specify availability in every Personal Use edition; check which features and files your account can access before depending on it. This is neither a privacy guarantee nor an account check performed here.
