Replacement Form 3 touchscreen: part references, cable, and Formlabs procedure
On a Formlabs Form 3, the touchscreen in the front shell is used to control the printer. For a replacement, Formlabs documentation refers to a display assembly. The parts catalog lists that assembly separately from the Light Processing Unit (LPU). This page helps identify the part number for your version, distinguish the screen from its ribbon cable, and follow the manufacturer procedure.
The short answer
For the Form 3, the repair guide covers the touchscreen display assembly; Formlabs lists the Light Processing Unit separately in its parts catalog. The catalog gives one assembly reference for Form 3/3+ and another for Form 3B/3B+, plus a separate display cable. The procedure requires unplugging the printer and waiting five minutes; a third T6 or Phillips screw may be present depending on manufacture date. Confirm the model and reference before choosing a part.
Which screen you are actually replacing on a Form 3
The Formlabs replacement guide concerns the touchscreen in the Form 3 front shell. The parts catalog lists the display assembly and Light Processing Unit as separate entries, with their own references and guides. For this page, the practical distinction is that the procedure below covers the touchscreen assembly, not LPU replacement.
According to the Formlabs guide titled Replacing the Form 3 display assembly, the touchscreen is the primary means of interacting with and controlling the printer. A broken or malfunctioning touchscreen can therefore prevent normal use even when the optics are fine. The Formlabs replacement part catalog confirms the split: the display assembly and the Light Processing Unit are separate entries with separate part numbers and separate guides.
Start with the symptom, but do not use it alone to diagnose a part. This page covers replacement of the touchscreen display assembly. Print-quality trouble belongs to a different diagnosis and different parts, handled with the logic in our guide to resin post-processing and the troubleshooting pages.
Matching the part number to your exact version
In the Form 3 generation table, the Formlabs replacement part guide lists a Display assembly row with several references. For the Form 3 and Form 3+, the part number shown is F3-FD-01. For the Form 3B and Form 3B+, the dental and medical versions, the part number is RP-F3B-DISP-01. The display cable has its own reference, RP-WL-DISPC-01, shared across both families. These identifiers reflect the catalog as captured in the source and should be rechecked before ordering.
The larger Form 3L appears in a separate table of the same document with its own display assembly and the same RP-WL-DISPC-01 cable. The newer Formlabs Form 4 uses a touchscreen assembly and ribbon cable listed as RP-F4-DISP-01 and RP-F4-DISPC-01 in the same catalog. A Form 4 screen is not a Form 3 screen.
Read the exact model name on the machine or in its settings, then find its row in the Formlabs part guide. The manufacturer points to its store and, if the part or product is not listed, to support or an authorized reseller. Confirm the reference for your revision before ordering: the entries cited here are not an exhaustive list of every possible revision.
Tools and preparation the Formlabs guide requires
The replacement guide lists exact supplies. From Formlabs, you need the replacement display assembly. From third parties, the guide calls for a 2.5 mm hex driver, a T6 Torx driver, a Phillips driver, and nitrile gloves. Formlabs estimates the job at 20 to 30 minutes. Two different drivers for what may be a single extra screw comes down to production variations covered below.
Preparation follows an order the guide justifies step by step. You remove the build platform first so resin cannot drip onto the LPU or into the printer cavity. You then remove the resin cartridge and close its vent cap, followed by the resin tank, which goes into its carrier under its lid. Formlabs reminds you to wear gloves and hold the tank by the grips on either side to avoid contaminating or damaging its underside.
Next, the guide asks for a clear, well-ventilated, dust-free workspace, then disconnection of the power cable with a five-minute wait before proceeding. Formlabs flags this as a danger item: no maintenance while plugged in, and never remove the back panel while the printer is connected to power. Any pooled resin in the cavity must be wiped up, with isopropyl alcohol if needed, keeping in mind the ventilation and safety precautions that apply to flammable solvents.
The ribbon cable is the fragile part of the job
The Formlabs guide specifically warns about damaging the ribbon cable that links the assembly to the motherboard. Once the screws are removed, the assembly is no longer secured to the frame, though its top tabs remain engaged. A large movement can damage or crease the ribbon. The manufacturer recommends reading all remaining steps before continuing.
The guide says the ribbon cable is held in its connector by a latch. Lift the latch away from the assembly to free the cable, then remove it. Never pull on the ribbon or move the display away from the printer before this step. The parts catalog lists display cable RP-WL-DISPC-01 separately; that entry alone does not establish that replacing only the cable is a supported repair. Ask Formlabs Support or an authorized reseller to confirm the correct part if unsure.
Formlabs also notes that the Form 3 contains sensitive electronic components. Before touching any electronics, the guide tells you to ground yourself with a grounding strap or by touching a grounded piece of metal. That habit applies to any internal work described in our 3D printer maintenance advice.
Removal and installation in the manufacturer's order
For removal, the guide has you place the printer so its front edge overhangs the work surface, giving access to the two 2.5 mm hex screws at the front of the bottom shell. These screws hold the display to the frame. Depending on the date of manufacture, a third screw may sit between the two hex screws. It is either a T6 Torx screw or a Phillips screw, which is why both drivers are on the list. If it is present, you remove it and set it aside.
The assembly comes free when you tilt its bottom slightly away from the printer and lower it to release the top tabs. You then rotate the assembly to the right to reach the ribbon cable connector, open the latch, remove the cable, and set the old screen aside.
Installation reverses the steps. Insert the ribbon cable into the new assembly connector without twisting or folding it, then lock the latch. Slide the top tabs under the shell, tilt the base flush, and check that the cable is not pinched. Reinstall the two 2.5 mm hex screws and tighten until snug. The reproduced installation step specifies these two screws; if your printer also has the optional third screw, follow instructions for your revision or ask support rather than treating silence as an instruction to leave it out.
Final checks and when to involve support
With the screen secured, the guide has you reconnect the power cable. The printer initializes and the touchscreen should light up. To confirm the repair, Formlabs suggests testing a variety of inputs, such as viewing the printer settings or browsing past prints in the print queue. If the screen responds correctly, the replacement is considered successful.
The guide asks you to contact Formlabs Support or an authorized reseller to share the procedure results. If the touchscreen still does not respond, ask what checks or parts to consider next; the symptom alone does not diagnose the ribbon cable, motherboard or another cause.
Keep the guide's general warning in mind as well. You must read and follow all safety instructions in the operator manual, because replacement with incorrect parts can lead to burns, shock, fire, or explosion. That warning alone justifies checking the part number against your version, Form 3, 3+, 3B, or 3B+, before you buy. If your machine is not a Form 3, start with your own model's part guide, or read our page on choosing a resin 3D printer to place the different technologies.
